Breathing correctly improves lung function and brings health benefits, but it's important to promote conscious breathing, as our cells require oxygen and need to expel carbon dioxide.

Breathing properly helps us maintain good mental health and emotional control. This is because breathing has a direct relationship with emotional state. Proper breathing promotes muscle relaxation, improves concentration, reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as enhancing balance, self-esteem, body image, and self-concept.

To regulate our respiratory awareness, it's important to engage in self-awareness exercises. The main one is called abdominal breathing, also known as deep breathing. The technique involves filling the entire lung base, elongating the diaphragm muscles.

To perform abdominal breathing correctly, get into a relaxed position that allows you to have full awareness of your body. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Inhale until you feel your belly filling up; you can place your hands on your belly to feel the movement. Release the air through your mouth and feel your belly emptying. Repeat the exercise for about 15 repetitions. Doing this three times a day will help you start retraining your breathing in a healthier way.
